COMMON LOCATIONS FOR BUS CRASHES IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA
There were 397 commercial bus crashes in Pennsylvania in 2024, three of which involved occupant fatalities. [1] Like most metropolitan areas, there are crash-prone zones due to larger populations and increased travel. In Pittsburgh, these include familiar high-risk roads and intersections, such asI-376, Route 28, the Liberty Tunnel, Carson Street, and the Fort Pitt Bridge.
Areas served by Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT), Pittsburgh Public Schools, and surrounding districts also see a high volume of bus traffic. These regions are more susceptible to crashes due to congestion and frequent stops.
The city of Pittsburgh is a hub for transportation, supporting commutes for students and members of the work force in droves. Over 200 school buses transport students each school year. There were more than 8,000 violations cited in their 2025 Report Card, most of them occurring within downtown city limits [2], with 14 reported crashes in Allegheny County's 2024 Crash Report [3]. The dataset also reported 91 crashes involving PRT and other city transit systems [4].
Pittsburgh is a beautiful historical city, which unfortunately leads to aging infrastructure that can cause terrifying bus accidents.
In January 2022, the Forbes Avenue Bridge over Fern Hollow collapsed, dropping a Port Authority Bus and its passengers 150feet down into a ravine. Luckily, no one died, but four passengers were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries [5].
In October 2019, a large sinkhole, around 20 feet deep, opened in downtown Pittsburgh during rush hour. Aside from the driver, there was a single passenger who was evacuated from the bus and treated for minor neck injuries [6].
After such complicated, shocking accidents, victims need to have experienced legal counsel to navigate everything that comes next and make the process easier and less stressful.
WHAT TO DO AFTER A BUS CRASH IN PITTSBURGH
If you are injured in a bus accident, follow these steps to preserve the integrity of your case:
- Ask the driver for the bus number, which is different from the route number. The bus number helps identify the vehicle involved in the accident.
- Be sure to get the incident number from the police officer and/or the port authority investigation agent so we can easily retrieve that information later.
- Capture the crash details while they're still fresh in your mind. You can jot them down on a piece of paper or record them with a voice recording app on your smartphone.
- Seek medical treatment immediately to have a documented record of your injuries.
- Do not give any statements to insurance companies, even your own, before speaking with a lawyer.
- Contact our Edgar Snyder & Associates team as soon as possible for a free legal consultation.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY AFTER A BUS ACCIDENT
