Know Your Rights: Storm Damage and Compensation in Pennsylvania

By:

Over the past few months, Western Pennsylvania has been hit by a series of powerful storms, leaving many residents dealing with property damage and prolonged power outages. As these extreme weather events persist, it's more important now than ever to understand your rights and responsibilities when it comes to storm-related damage.

Edgar Snyder & Associates’ Chief Marketing Officer and Owner, Rob Fisher, recently joined Pittsburgh Today Live (PTL) to share key legal insights on storm damage, compensation, and the steps you should take if your property is affected.

Who’s Responsible When a Tree Falls?

During the segment, PTL posed a common question that many PA residents have:

PTL: If a tree from your yard falls onto your neighbor’s house, who’s responsible for the damage?

Rob Fisher: It depends on the circumstances. If the tree was dead or clearly rotting and you failed to take care of it, you could be held liable, and your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance would likely cover the damage. However, if the tree falls due to a severe storm—which is something out of anyone’s control—the general rule is that the homeowner where the damage occurred is responsible for their own property.

More Than Just Fallen Trees

In the full interview, Rob also discusses:

• When you’re legally required to report hazardous conditions on your property

• Whether you can be compensated for spoiled food during a power outage

• What to do if power lines fall near or on your property
