Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income

You were recently found disabled by the Social Security Administration....now what? Understanding what type(s) of benefits you are eligible to receive can be complex and confusing. Here is the breakdown:

What is Social Security Disability (SSD)?

Social Security Disability (SSD) is a program that is based on your work history. When you work and pay taxes, you earn "work credits." Your credits continue to grow the longer you work. Once you have earned 40 credits - about 10 years of steady work - you are eligible to receive SSD if you are found to be disabled. The monthly payment amount associated with this benefit is different for everyone and is based on how long you have worked and how much you have made.

What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

Another type of program is called Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This is a needs-based program that may be available to disabled individuals who have little or no work history. This is also the type of program that extends to disabled children. The SSI payment is a set amount per month and is the same amount for everyone who receives SSI, currently $967 per month.

Can You Receive Both SSD and SSI?

You may also be eligible to receive both SSD and SSI if the amount of your monthly SSD payment is below the set monthly SSI payment. This will depend on your living situation, household contributions, and a variety of other factors.
