Right to Privacy at Concerts

By:

In recent news, at a Coldplay concert, two individuals were put on a jumbotron and had their affair exposed. Due to this internet-viral event, many individuals are now asking questions regarding their privacy at concerts or other public events. Edgar Snyder & Associates’ Chief Production Officer and Owner Brad Trust appeared on Pittsburgh Today Live (PTL) to answer some common questions about privacy when attending public events.

Do You Have a Right Not to be Shown on the Jumbotron?

Brad Trust: Generally, when you’re out in public, you have no right to privacy. I would suggest that when you’re at a concert or a public event you have even less of a right to privacy. You go through security where you must empty your bags or even get patted down. Also hundreds or thousands of people are taking photos where you can be caught in the photograph.

PTL: Are there exceptions to being photographed or recorded in public?

Brad Trust: You cannot photograph or record anyone in restrooms or other intimate settings.

Concert ‘Need to Knows’

In the rest of the segment, Brad goes on to discuss the following concert-related topics:

  • Is there anything that you can do legally if you purchase a fake ticket/ or a ticket that didn’t meet your expectations from a third-party vendor?
  • How people should prepare for outdoor concerts (hydration, weather, etc.)
  • Concert traffic
  • The importance of having a designated driver if consuming alcohol
