What are Ozempic and Wegovy?
Used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and weight management, Ozempic and Wegovy are the brand names for the prescription medication known as Semaglutide which is manufactured by Novo Nordisk. According to The FDA, semaglutide works by mimicking the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone which tells the body to produce more insulin leading to a reduction in blood sugar and in high enough quantities, this hormone can also reduce appetite while inciting feelings of fullness. 2017 - 2024 Timeline
The following Information was gathered from The FDA, Novo Nordisk, and Drug Watch:
- December 2017: Ozempic approved by FDA to treat type 2 diabetes.
- June 2021: Wegovy approved by FDA for weight management in the treatment of obesity.
- August 2022: Lawyers began accepting Ozempic lawsuits after a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine linked Ozempic to a higher risk of gallbladder disease and gallstones.
- August 2023: One of the first Ozempic gastroparesis lawsuits was filed. The plaintiff alleged the medication caused severe gastrointestinal issues including stomach paralysis also known as gastroparesis which led to several hospitalizations for vomiting and stomach pain.
- February 2024: At least 55 lawsuits claiming Ozempic (as well as other GLP -1RAS class drugs) was responsible for gastrointestinal injuries were filed. These lawsuits were combined into a federal multidistrict litigation in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
