When you've been fortunate, you give back. That's Pittsburgh pro football defensive player Cameron Heyward's philosophy, and the reason why he launched The Heyward House, his official foundation benefitting children and families in need.
Edgar Snyder & Associates is a proud supporter of The Heyward House and the programs it helps provide to organizations such as KidsVoice – a Pittsburgh-based non-profit agency that advocates for children involved in Allegheny County's child-welfare system.
"I wanted to be able to connect and help kids throughout Pittsburgh, and KidsVoice is a great outlet that allowed me to do exactly that," Cam said. “The work that KidsVoice does is so important, and it’s an honor to be a part of their mission."
Some of the nearly 3,000 children that KidsVoice represents each year live in group homes, and others are navigating their way through the foster care system. Some have been abused and neglected. Some have parents who are in prison. Most are from low-income families.
Now they have a friend in Cam, The Heyward House, and Edgar Snyder & Associates.
“Cam’s support has an impact well beyond his financial support of KidsVoice. When Cam sends birthday cards and gifts to our children who don’t have parents in their lives to do that, or when he hosts a birthday party at Dave & Buster’s where Cam and his teammates play arcade games with our clients and make them feel incredibly special, it all sends a powerful message," said KidsVoice Executive Director Scott Hollander. "To have someone they look up to as a sports hero and person care and believe in what each of our abused and neglected clients is capable of boosts their confidence and gives them a positive role model and greater belief in themselves and what they can achieve. "
He added: "No amount of money can buy that."
Throughout the year, The Heyward House, established last year, will treat children from KidsVoice to myriad of fun activities, including field trips and a visit Steelers training camp. They also enjoy an outing to Dick's Sporting Goods around Christmas time to shop for coats and boots to make sure they are warm and dry during the winter.
The Heyward House is helping kids in other ways, too. The programs that Cam and his foundation support do everything from provide birthday presents for children living in foster care or government housing, to fund after-school physical fitness programs at financially strapped schools.
In addition, The Heyward House is helping to raise awareness for childhood asthma—something Cam himself struggled with as a child. The foundation will also work to raise money to support research and treatments for people suffering from brain tumors. That's another cause close to Cam's heart: His father, famous Pittsburgh fullback Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, died from a brain tumor in 2006.
