Pradaxa and Gastrointestinal Bleeding

The prescription drug Pradaxa, known in generic form as dabigatran, is used to help treat people who suffer from atrial fibrillation (a condition where the heart beats irregularly). Pradaxa helps prevent blood clots and stroke by thinning the blood.

It's considered a type of anticoagulant known as a thrombin inhibitor. Pradaxa is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010. More than two million Americans suffer from atrial fibrillation, and Pradaxa has quickly become a common prescription to treat the condition.

Alert: Patients Ages 75 or Older Taking Pradaxa

The FDA is investigating Pradaxa and its danger of causing gastrointestinal bleeding in elderly people. Those 75 and older are most at risk. The FDA reported that bleeding, internal hemorrhaging, and gastrointestinal bleeding have caused at least 260 deaths and thousands of severe health problems.

Other serious side effects of taking Pradaxa (dabigatran) include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Coughing up blood
  • Urine or stools with pink, brown, red, or black
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Heart attack
  • Ulcers
