Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 92
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a widespread outbreak of drug-resistant salmonella, which has sickened 92 people across 29 states, including Pennsylvania.
Reports indicate that this outbreak is connected to a variety of raw chicken products, but the CDC has not yet identified one individual supplier. Early reports also indicate that salmonella samples are present in live chickens, many types of raw chicken products, and raw chicken pet food, meaning that the outbreak could be widespread in the chicken industry.
Salmonella and Food Safety
Salmonella is one of the most common bacteria to cause foodborne illness, and it can cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal pains, and related symptoms. In some cases, it can require hospitalization. Testing shows that this outbreak strain of salmonella is resistant to multiple antibiotics, the typical treatment for salmonella.
The CDC does not yet advise that consumers stop eating chicken, and no recall has been issued at this time. Outbreaks are frequently the result of undercooked poultry, meats, and eggs, so it's crucial that you always follow proper food preparation. Be sure to cook food thoroughly, don't allow raw products to touch other foods or surfaces, and wash your hands often.

Hi, my name is Mollie Rosenzweig - I'm one of the attorneys here at Edgar Snyder & Associates, and I'm going to talk briefly today about the devastating salmonella outbreak that has been in the news lately. I'm going to start by saying I'm really sorry if you or someone you know has been affected by this. We don't know a lot about the source of the outbreak right now. What we do know is that is has been going on since January. Right now just under one hundred people have been affected by it, and states across the country have reported cases, Pennsylvania being one of the hardest-hit states. One of the other facts that we know about this salmonella outbreak is that this strain is antibiotic resistant, and an antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella is dangerous for a couple reasons. The first is that an individual experiences more severe symptoms when they have been affected by an antibiotic-resistant strain. That in turn can lead to an increased rate of hospitalizations. When someone seeks care at a hospital, the low-level antibiotics that would typically be used to fight off the infection aren't effective, and they have to resort to higher-level antibiotics that are used less frequently. So this is threatening both to an individual who has been affected, but also to the public health at large, because we are using antibiotics that aren't typically used. A salmonella outbreak like this can be the result of negligence, but it is also important to take steps to protect yourself by cooking poultry products properly and being really careful about how you handle raw poultry in your own kitchen.
