09.11.2013 UPDATE -- The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it has received reports of 89 people becoming ill after eating Chobani Greek Yogurt. The yogurt may have been contaminated by mold.
The reports haven't been confirmed and don't mean the FDA has concluded that the yogurt caused the illnesses.
09.06.2013 ORIGINAL STORY -- The popular Greek yogurt brand Chobani has voluntarily recalled products after complaints of swollen packaging and illness after eating the yogurt.
The company suspects the containers are bursting due to a mold contamination. While officials say the type of mold found in the yogurt is normal in dairy products and isn't likely to cause illness, they have recalled the products as a precaution.
The affected products are marked with the code 16-012 and have best-buy dates of September 11, 2013 to October 7, 2013. The recall affects all flavors of Chobani in the following packaging:
Chobani originally issued a product withdrawal, meaning that the contaminated yogurt should already be pulled from retail stores. However, because the status has changed from withdrawal to recall, Chobani advises consumers who have already purchased the yogurt to discard it and contact them at 877-847-61814 for a replacement or refund. For a list of all affected lots, visit the FDA's recall notice. You can also visit Chobani's blog for more information.
