String of Tragedies Strike the Pittsburgh Bicycle Community

hit-and-run accidents

What a scary summer it's been for bikers in our city. In the past few months there have been at least four tragedies in the news.

First, there was a fatal hit-and-run on Penn Avenue in July. A week later, there was another fatal accident on Penn Avenue. This Tuesday a cyclist was struck and critically injured in Highland Park. And then on Wednesday, a bike rider's throat was slit on the South Side. Police said they're unsure if the attack was related to a traffic incident.

It is absolutely unbelievable that these types of things could happen. People's safety and lives are being threatened and taken for granted, and it makes you wonder what's going to happen next. As someone who is a frequent bike rider, I can only hope that our state's new bike law and hit-and-run law help prevent (or at the very least reduce) the dangers that cyclists face on our roads.
