Labor Day Safety: Don't Drink and Drive

labor day drunk driving

Many people look forward to the long Labor Day weekend and the time they get to spend with family and friends at parties and picnics. Unfortunately, it is also one of the deadliest times on the road for motorists, so I'd like to remind everyone not to drink and drive over the three-day weekend.

AAA predicts that this will be the most heavily-traveled Labor Day holiday in four years, with 33 million people venturing at least 50 miles from home. The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that there will be roughly 400 traffic fatalities and over 40,000 injuries related to car accidents over the weekend, some of which will be due to drunk drivers. To keep these numbers down, state and local law enforcement agencies will be participating in their annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign now through the end of Labor Day.

Please keep the following tips in mind this weekend to help you stay safe:

  • First and foremost, if you are drinking – do not drive. Designate a non-drinking driver or take a taxi home.
  • Wear your seatbelt, make sure all your passengers are buckled up, and keep children in the proper safety seats. The NSC estimates that over 100 additional lives could be saved this holiday weekend if all motorists buckle up.
  • Drive defensively. There will be a lot more drivers on the road than normal, and some of them could be impaired. Use extra caution when you're behind the wheel.

Take a minute to sign our Safe and Sober Pledge for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card. The next drawing is on September 6.

Have a fun and safe holiday!
