Our 2012 Words to be Heard Scholarship Dinner

2012 words to be heard scholarship winners

Over the past six years, I've been honored to award 56 college scholarships totaling over $70,000 to high school seniors throughout western Pennsylvania. On Monday, I had the pleasure of doing it again. We held a dinner honoring our 2012 Words to be Heard Scholarship Contest winners, and the partners and I enjoyed meeting the very special group of young adults behind the proposals to prevent drunk driving and texting while driving. The competition was stiff: we had more than 400 entries this year, which were judged by an outside panel of professionals. We were all amazed at the bright ideas, talent and skills these kids have. While the students knew they won a scholarship, they didn't know the award amount until we announced everything at the dinner:

Joshua Sarver
$5,000 Grand Prize Winner
Meyersdale Area High School

Bridget Bianconi
Megan Roethlein
Hampton High School

Lauren Fleishaker
Baldwin High School

Lauren Snyder
Southmoreland High School

Max Fedore
Richland High School

Courtney Gibson
Apollo Ridge High School

Nicholas Pardini
$1,000 Winner
Cathedral Prep

You can learn more about the contest and find links to all of their proposals on our Scholarship Page.

We're not the only ones recognizing these young leaders. The local media has also featured some of our winners in stories recently:

Max Fedore in Tribune-Democrat

Lauren Fleishaker in Baldwin-Whitehall Patch

Nicholas Pardini on

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in our contest – it's wonderful to see that so many students feel strongly about discouraging their peers from texting and driving and underage drinking and drunk driving.

Congratulations to our winners, and best of luck in everything you do!
