Simply Thick Food Thickener Recalled Due To Serious Health Complications in Infants

simply thick

The parents of premature babies have enough on their minds – is my baby going to be ok? Will he or she have lasting health problems? The last thing they need to worry about is that a product that's supposed make their baby healthier will actually pose life-threatening risks. Unfortunately, this is may be what happened recently with a product called Simply Thick.

Simply Thick is an edible thickening gel used to ease swallowing in premature infants. It was recalled in June 2011 after it was after it was suspected to cause a serious condition called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

NEC causes the tissue in an infant's intestines to become inflamed and die. Victims of NEC often need to have part of their intestine removed and may suffer from lifelong medical problems. Symptoms of NEC include:

  • Green vomit
  • Diarrhea or bloody stool
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Red or blue color in the belly
  • Tiredness
  • Problems with body temperature and breathing
  • Slow heart rate
  • Scarring or narrowing of the bowel
  • Poor absorption of nutrients
  • Death

Initially, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning stating that Simply Thick was not to be used with infants born before 37 weeks gestation, premature infants in the hospital, or within 30 days of a baby coming home from the hospital.

Later, an investigation found that the manufacturer, Thermo Pac, LLC, failed to process Simply Thick in a manner that would destroy bacteria that could be harmful to consumers. As a result, Thermo Pac has been named in a series of lawsuits that allege the contaminated packs of Simply Thick caused NEC in premature infants and in some cases led to death.

So far, Simply Thick may have been responsible for at least two deaths and 15 cases of NEC in babies who ingested the gel when it was mixed with breast milk or infant formula.
