new Pittsburgh-area construction projects

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced several new local construction projects on Monday, which was also the start of Work Zone Awareness Week.

There are a number of construction projects currently underway in the Pittsburgh area, including bridge work on Interstate 79 in Marshall, construction on Route 28, and Route 19 improvements in Wexford. PennDOT said that the following projects will be added to the mix:

  • Landslide repairs on William Penn Highway in Churchill
  • Gas line work near McMurray Road in Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair
  • Bridge work at Route 51 and I-70 in Rostraver
  • Construction on I-79 in Mercer County

There were 667 deaths and 40,000 injuries in work zone accidents across the nation in 2009, and 23 people were killed in Pennsylvania. According to the Federal Highway Administration, 85 percent of those killed in work zones are drivers and their passengers.

Work Zone Awareness Week was launched in 1999 to encourage safe driving in construction zones. In addition to a nationwide media campaign, states hold events to promote the effort. PennDOT District 11 held an event in the Route 28 construction zone Monday morning to kick off awareness week.
