General Motors (GM) is expanding a previous recall to include 26,751 trucks and SUVs. There is a problem with the vehicles' rear axles that may cause the defective parts to lock.
The recall includes the following 2011 models: Cadillac Escalade; Escalade ESV; Cadillac EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL. GM said the rear-axle pins, which hold the axle in place, weren't properly heat-treated and might not be durable. If they fracture, the axle can lock, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
GM said that owners are being contacted and are encouraged not to drive the trucks until the axle pin is replaced. The previous recall, issued in December, covered 1,262 trucks and SUVs.
