Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

Did you undergo hip replacement surgery? Did you have problems and need to have a second, or even a third surgery? Are you in constant pain from your hip implant?
One of the most common types of hip implants is called a metal-on-metal hip implant. With metal-on-metal hip implants (also called MoM implants), both the ball and socket parts of the implant are made of metal.
Metal-on-metal hip implants made by companies like Zimmer and DePuy have caused patients more medical bills, surgeries, and stress. Some people even have experienced cobalt and chromium poisoning from the metal implants, known as metallosis.
If you received a hip implant and have suffered from pain, difficulty walking, and inflammation, you may have received a metal-on-metal hip implant. And, you may have a case. The metal parts from the implant may be rubbing against one another, or even breaking off and entering into your body.
Thousands of hip implant patients have suffered from medical complications due to defective metal-on-metal hip implants. Call your doctor to find out what type of hip implant you received, and then contact the Pennsylvania law firm of Edgar Snyder & Associates for a free legal consultation.
Symptoms of Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Failure
Over 250,000 patients will undergo hip replacement surgeries every year – nearly one-third are metal-on-metal hip implants made by Zimmer, DuPuy, Wright, and Johnson & Johnson. Studies have shown a high failure rate with metal-on-metal hip implants. Failure rates have been as high as 30 percent, and the hip implants fail within several years.
The problem with metal-on-metal hip implants is that their parts deteriorate, rub against each other, and break off. The parts that break off can enter into other parts of the body or the bloodstream, causing metallosis and other serious injuries. Patients that suffer from metallosis may have to have surgery to remove infected tissue – on top of having problems with the hip implant itself.
If you received a metal-on-metal hip implant, you may experience:
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Difficulty walking/going up stairs
- Limping
Blood tests can help determine whether you have toxic levels of cobalt or chromium in your body.
DePuy Recalls ASR Hip Replacement Systems Due to High Failure Rates
Two of DePuy’s products include the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System – more than 93,000 of the products were implanted during hip replacement surgeries.
The ASR XL Acetabular Metal-on-Metal Hip System became available in 2005, and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) received more than 300 complaints from patients who received the ASR product.
DePuy recalled the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System in August 2010 after the National Joint Registry found the two products were associated with high failure rates. According to research, one out of every eight patients will need a second hip replacement surgery to fix the first one within five years.
The ASR Hip Resurfacing System was not approved by the FDA for use in the U.S., but some patients may have received the implant through a clinical trial.
