Fleet Phospho-soda

What is Fleet Phospho-soda?
Fleet Phospho-soda is an over-the-counter laxative used to cleanse the bowels before a colonoscopy. Multiple people have filed lawsuits against Fleet’s manufacturer, C.B. Fleet Co., claiming that the company improperly promoted the use of double doses of Fleet, despite knowing that it could cause a form of kidney failure known as acute phosphate nephropathy. One plaintiff required dialysis and another will likely require a transplant. Many times, the kidney damage is permanent.
Fleet Phospho-soda was recalled in December 2008. The Food and Drug Administration never approved the product for use in bowel prep before a colonoscopy. All codes of the following were included in the recall:
- Fleet Phospho Soda Oral Saline Laxative, Unflavored, 1.5oz
- Fleet Phospho Soda Oral Saline Laxative, Ginger-Lemon, 1.5oz
- Fleet Phospho Soda EZ-Prep Bowel Cleansing System
