“Words to be Heard” Scholarship Contest

Scholarship Contest Winners

Penns Valley Area High School senior, Sierra Leitch, won the 2007 Edgar Snyder & Associates “Words to be Heard” scholarship contest. Graduating seniors in Central PA school districts were encouraged to write a 1,500-2,000 word essay concerning the following question:

A friend of yours was killed in a car crash following a party where alcohol was served. Their blood-alcohol level was .10. What could you, as a friend, have done to prevent this accident? What can be done as a community to get the message out to your peers that drinking and driving is dangerous?

Sierra’s essay contained several good ideas on ways to help cut down on the underage drinking epidemic. Sadly, her ideas were based off of a personal experience dealing with a fatal drunk-driving accident. For her well-written essay, Sierra received a $2,500 scholarship from Edgar Snyder & Associates to be used toward her education at Penn State Altoona.

Three runners-up who won $500 scholarships include: Michael Wiedemer of State College Area High School, Heidi Eastep of Central High School, and Eric McCrum of Bellwood-Antis High School.
