$1.5 Million Welding-Fumes Settlement

September 2005

There could be good news for long-suffering welders stuck in legal battles. The first of many cases citing that welding fumes causes Parkinson’s disease was settled for more than $1.5 million. Legal experts believe the decision will quicken the pace of settlement talks and monetary distributions in thousands of other cases.

The case was settled right before jury selection was to begin in a Cleveland federal court. This was the first of more than 9,500 cases still pending in state courts.

For decades, ailing welders have claimed the fumes released during the welding process are the reason for their Parkinson’s disease diagnoses. The fumes are saturated with manganese, a metal linked to a number of neurological disorders. More than 500,000 welders in the US have been exposed to welding fumes in the workplace.
