Teens Exposed to Workplace Dangers
March 2007
Parents, do you know what dangers or illegal conditions your teens could
be exposed to in the workplace? A study published by the American
Academy of Pediatrics has revealed that many American teens from ages 14
to 18 often work retail and service jobs that are unsafe and
unsupervised.
Averaging 16 work hours a week, these jobs often put teens in peril while using hazardous equipment. Due to lack of adult supervision, over 50 percent of males and over 40 percent of females reported tasks and conditions considered prohibited under law.
Other troubling data included lack of safety training, exposure to robbery risks, and working long hours during the week that could affect school and sleep.
