Fewer Injured Workers, Higher Work Comp Costs
August 2005
Workers’ compensation costs have nearly risen 10%, despite fewer workers covered and fewer reported injuries.
Employers’ costs climbed to $80.8 billion in 2003, a 9.6% increase from 2002. The increase in costs is attributed to higher insurance premiums.
However, the injuries reported by workers were more serious resulting in an increase of money paid out. Cash benefits paid to injured workers and medical costs totaled $54.9 billion, an increase of 3.2% from the previous year.
