Ford Knew About SUV Rollover Dangers
August 2005
Did Ford know about the dangerous design flaws in their SUVs? According to internal company documents, they did.
In 1993, company engineers advised Ford to reinforce roof supports in the Explorer to prevent collapses in rollovers. However, the U.S. government did not require this feature, and Ford did not take the engineers’ advice. Three years later, Ford documents prove company engineers believed moving the shock absorbers toward the wheels would help prevent rollovers. Again, the change was not made.
These shocking revelations, along with other damaging statements culled from internal documents, are being used against Ford in more than 500 lawsuits claiming that Ford Explorers were defective—in an attempt to put profit before safety.
