Greater Johnstown High School Senior Wins Grand Prize Scholarship

Greater Johnstown High School senior, Lindsay Matolyak of Johnstown, PA, is the grand-prize winner of the 2008 Edgar Snyder & Associates “Words to be Heard” scholarship contest. Lindsay won a $2,500 scholarship to be used toward her Indiana University of Pennsylvania education.

Seniors attending high schools throughout Central Pennsylvania were invited to write a 1,500 to 2,000 word proposal for a program that would teach pre-teens and teenagers the consequences associated with underage drinking.

Lindsay’s idea is to create an organization by the name, “BATT- Bringing Awareness to Teens.” BATT would serve in middle schools and high schools as an organization and guidance center.

In addition to the $2,500 scholarship, Edgar Snyder & Associates awarded a $1,000 scholarship prize to Joshua Kennedy of Central High School in Martinsburg, PA. Three runners-up also received $500 scholarships. Those winners include: Andrew Saylor of Meyersdale Area High School in Meyersdale, Kate Wilt of Bellefonte Area High School in Bellefonte, and Julia Flores of Altoona Area High School in Altoona.

“We wanted this contest to help us learn, from teens, what we can do to help prevent alcohol-related tragedies among their peers,” said Attorney Edgar Snyder.

During the Prom season and holidays throughout the year, the law firm discourages underage drinking and driving through several media campaigns. Edgar Snyder & Associates, along with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, already sponsor Road Radio USA, a multi-media “edu-tainment” school assembly for teens and pre-teens designed to prevent underage drinking and other destructive behaviors.
