Penns Valley High School Senior Wins $2,500 Scholarship

Penns Valley High School senior, Sierra Leitch of Rebersburg, Pa., is the grand-prize winner of the 2007 Edgar Snyder & Associates “Words to be Heard” scholarship contest. Sierra won a $2,500 scholarship to be used toward her Penn State Altoona education.

Seniors attending high schools throughout western Pennsylvania were invited to write a 1,500 to 2,000 word essay answering the following questions:

A friend of ours was killed in a car crash following a party were alcohol was served. Their blood-alcohol level was .10. What could you, as a friend, have done to prevent this accident? What can be done as a community to get the message out to your peers that drinking and driving is dangerous?

Sierra’s essay contained several well-written ideas on how to help prevent the underage drinking epidemic. Sadly, her ideas were based off of a personal experience dealing with a fatal drunk-driving accident.

Three runners-up who won $500 scholarships include: Michael Wiedemer of State College Area High School, Heidi Eastep of Central High School, and Eric McCrum of Bellwood-Antis High School.

“We wanted this contest to help us learn, from teens, what we can do to help prevent alcohol-related tragedies among their peers,” said Attorney Edgar Snyder.

The law firm of Edgar Snyder & Associates hopes to take some of the ideas in the essays and help make them happen in the communities. During the Prom season and the holidays, the law firm discourages underage drinking and driving through several media campaigns. They have even been honored with the Community Advocate Award for these campaigns by the Blair Countians for Drug-Free Communities. Edgar Snyder & Associates, along with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, already sponsor Road Radio USA, a multi-media “edu-tainment” school assembly for teens and pre-teens designed to prevent underage drinking and other destructive behaviors.

If you are interested in obtaining more information about the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving, or if you would like your students to experience Road Radio USA first-hand, please visit www.edgarsnyder.com. Edgar Snyder & Associates is a law firm representing injured people with offices in Altoona, Ebensburg, Erie, Johnstown and Pittsburgh.
