More Bikers Without Helmets Dying in Accidents

June 2006

Did Pennsylvania lawmakers make the right decision when they repealed the mandatory helmet law in September 2003? Before exercising your right not to wear a helmet, consider the facts. Since that decision was made, motorcycle deaths have increased by one-third.

Statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation indicate:

  • In 2003, 156 motorcycle deaths occurred with 118 motorcyclists wearing helmets and 27 not wearing one.
  • In 2004, 158 deaths took place with 74 drivers wearing a helmet and 70 not wearing one.
  • In 2005, 205 deaths occurred with 106 drivers wearing a helmet and 87 not wearing one.

Pennsylvania state law allows bikers 21 and older to ride without a helmet if they have at least two years of riding experience or took a rider education course. Twenty states require bikers to wear helmets, while another 27 states do not.
