Law Firm to Sponsor Biker Rally in Johnstown, PA

Every day the attorneys and staff at Edgar Snyder & Associates see first-hand the devastation caused by motorcycle accidents. As a sponsor of Johnstown, Pennsylvania’s upcoming biker event, Thunder in the Valley, Edgar Snyder & Associates wants to remind bikers to stay safe while hitting the open road.

Steps you can take to ride safer:

1. Take a motorcycle training class.

A survey done by the Motorcycle Industry Council found that 62% of motorcyclists never took a training course. Officials believe motorcycle training courses reduce rider errors; bikers would not panic when negotiating difficult roads, learning how to make quick decisions.

2. Get your motorcycle license.

Since many states allow riders to operate a motorcycle for years with only a permit, an estimated 14% of motorcyclists are not licensed, according to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says 24% of fatal crashes in 2003 involved an unlicensed motorcyclist.

3. Know your state’s helmet laws.

So far, anti-helmet motorcycle advocates have successfully lobbied for the elimination or weakening of helmet laws in 29 states, including Pennsylvania. Citing complaints that helmets make it harder to see and hear and that they are too hot in the summer, the bikers argue that the decision not to wear a helmet is their choice to make.

But before hitting the open road without a helmet, every motorcycle rider should consider this, in the states that repealed mandatory helmet laws, motorcycle deaths more than doubled, sometimes in as little as three years.
