Pennsylvania Issues New Motorcycle Permit Laws
January 2006
Getting your motorcycle permit in Pennsylvania just got a little bit harder. That’s because the days of just filling out an application are over. Motorcycle operators must now pass a knowledge test before they receive a learner’s permit.
Previously, motorcycle permits were issued prior to knowledge tests. According to Pennsylvania’s transportation secretary, the change was made so that anyone learning to ride a bike has enough knowledge and understanding about motorcycles before hitting the open road.
Applicants will be offered the test immediately after returning an application. If they pass the test, they will be issued a learner’s permit. Permits issued prior to January 9, 2006 will not be affected by the new rules.
