Keep Safety in Mind While Holiday Shopping

November 2006

As the holiday season drawers near, Edgar Snyder & Associates wants you to keep safety in mind when shopping for children’s toys. What you might think is a harmless toy could be dangerous for a small child.

Here are some tips for buying toys, according to the U.S. Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

  • Check the label for age requirements.
  • Make sure the toys you purchase have the code ASTM F963. This code means the toy meets voluntary rules that guard against laceration, entrapment, and strangulation.
  • If a toy requires adult supervision, that means an adult should also being playing with the child and the toy.
  • If you have children of different ages, make sure their toys are kept separate. What’s appropriate for your 7-year-old may not be safe for your 2-year-old.
  • Read and review instructions carefully.
  • Save directions, warranties, and assembly materials.
  • Check that batteries are secured properly.

The holiday season should be a happy time for you and your family. We hope that these guidelines will help make it a safe one too.
