Summer Safety at a Glance

When emergency room staff refer to summer as “trauma season,” you know it must be serious. The more time you spend outdoors, the more prone you are to injuries. Keep these safety tips in mind while you, and those you care about, enjoy the outdoors.

Pool Safety

  • Pools should be surrounded by a gate or fence at least four feet high with a childproof latch.
  • Never leave children unsupervised in a pool area.
  • Never dive or slide headfirst into any pool less than five feet deep.
  • Drain baby pools after each use to prevent drowning.

Playground Safety

  • Keep children away from playground parts that may pinch or trap body parts.
  • Avoid hot metal slides that can cause burns.
  • Always supervise children who are on a trampoline.

Bicycle Safety

  • Wear a safety helmet at all times.
  • Children should not ride bicycles that are too big for them.

Car Safety

  • Never leave children or pets in the car. Even on cooler days, temperatures within a car can quickly rise to life-threatening levels.
