Pool Safety Alert
May 2005
Hidden dangers can turn a pool or spa into a watery deathtrap, particularly for children. Each year 250 children drown in swimming pools and another 2,300 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for nearly drowning. These deaths and injuries are preventable with a few extra safety steps.
- Secure pools with protective barriers-such as a fence. Also consider installing an alarm on the doors leading to the pool area.
- Always have rescue equipment and a phone near the pool.
- Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at a local Red Cross.
- Always supervise children when they are near a pool.
- If a child is missing, check near the pool first. A quick response could be a matter of life or death.
Also keep in mind the dangers of drain entrapments. Since 1990, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that 130 people have become entrapped on pool or spa drains when their hair became entangled in the drain cover resulting in 27 deaths. Always inspect drain covers and make sure they are secure. Replace missing or broken covers, which are the major reason entrapment occurs.
