Summer's Here: Protect Your Kids at the Pool
At Edgar Snyder & Associates, we want to help parents and caretakers know the risks that pools, especially inflatable pools, pose. It's important to protect children from drowning hazards, many of which can be prevented.
Here are just a few shocking swimming pool injury statistics:
- Around 375 children younger than age five drown each year.
- Nearly 3,000 kids four and under visit the emergency room every year due to drowning hazards.
- 47 child drowning deaths occurred from 2004-2006 involving inflatable pools.
Inflatable pools are riskier because they fall outside of building codes that require barriers, and people purchasing these pools do not usually consider the barriers needed to help protect small children. CPSC is working with consumer safety groups, retailers and inflatable pool manufacturers to create safety standards for these products.
All pools pose a drowning risk though. To help reduce this risk, the CPSC recommends layers of protection such as fences with self-closing and latching gates. Always be prepared for an accident by having rescue equipment and a phone near the pool. Parents and caregivers should also know CPR.
Be aware that children often fall into water without making a sound, so if a child is missing look in the pool first. Every second counts when dealing with a drowning accident.
