Prevent an Unnecessary Head Injury: Wear a Helmet
August 2006
Another school year is just around the corner and many kids opt to ride bikes, skateboards and scooters rather than the school bus. If your child plans to get to school in one of these ways, be certain they are wearing an appropriate helmet that could reduce the risk of a serious head injury or even death.
Consider these statistics about the year 2005 alone:
- About 180 children died in bicycle-related accidents.
- Over 250,000 bicycle-related emergency room injuries involved children under age 15.
By simply wearing a helmet, the risk of a serious head injury can be reduced by 85 percent. Make sure your child’s helmet has a label inside indicating that it meets the CPSC standards, and that they are wearing an appropriate helmet for their activity. For more information on helmets, visit the CPSC website.
