Have a Safe Halloween

October 2006

Halloween is one of the most anticipated times of the year for kids, but trick-or-treating is also filled with many unexpected dangers. Keep trick-or-treaters safe this Halloween, follow the tips issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

Costumes

  • When purchasing costumes, make sure the fabrics and materials are flame-resistant.
  • Avoid oversized costumes.
  • Make sure costumes are light and clearly visible to motorists.
  • Trim costumes and bags with reflective tape that will glow in a car’s headlights.
  • Children should carry flashlights.

Treats

  • Do not allow children to eat any treats until they have been carefully examined by an adult.
  • Examine any toys received by children under age 3 to see if they present a choking hazard.

Decorations

  • Keep candles and Jack O’ Lanterns away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush up against the flame.
  • Remove any tripping hazards if expecting trick-or-treaters.
  • Keep candles away from curtains, decorations and other combustibles.

Edgar Snyder & Associates hopes everyone follows these trick or treat safety tips and has a happy Halloween.
