Denture Cleansers Linked to Injury and Death

March 2008

Denture cleansers cause injury You may not be aware, but there are dangers lurking in your denture cleanser. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health notification to consumers alerting them of severe allergic reactions to persulfates, a common ingredient in denture cleaning products.

Over 70 severe reactions, including at least one death, have been linked to denture cleansers and persulfates. The onset of allergic reactions may not occur for years after initial use. Common reactions include:

  • Breathing problems
  • Gum tenderness
  • Hives
  • Irritation
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rash
  • Tissue damage

In addition to allergic reactions, misuse of the product may account for some adverse events such as:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bleaching of tissue
  • Blood in the urine
  • Breathing problems
  • Burns
  • Damage to the esophagus
  • Internal bleeding
  • Low blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting

Users should make sure to read all instructions carefully and never chew, gargle, or swallow denture cleansers. The FDA is currently working with the makers of denture cleaning products to update cleanser warning labels.
