Veggie Snacks Pose Salmonella Risk

June / July 2007

UPDATE – Robert’s American Gourmet has expanded their initial recall announcement by adding another snack to the list, Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks. Both Veggie Booty and the Veggie Tings Sticks were flavored with the same seasoning. The manufacturer is still unsure about the source of Salmonella contamination in their snacks, and has added Veggie Tings as a precautionary measure.

Salmonella from Veggie Booty Attention parents – snacking healthy just became more dangerous. Robert’s American Gourmet brand Veggie Booty snacks have been recalled due to a risk of Salmonella poisoning. The vegetable treats may be tainted with a form of bacteria that leads to food poisoning and gastrointestinal illness.

Veggie Booty is puffed rice and corn pieces flavored with spinach, kale, cabbage, carrots and broccoli. The snacks are frequently consumed by children, putting them at serious risk of exposure to Salmonella poisoning.

Since March 2007, 60 cases of illness have been linked to Robert's American Gourmet brand Veggie snacks, including four incidents in Pennsylvania. Symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever may begin anywhere from one to four days following exposure to the Salmonella bacteria.
