Spinach is Safe Unless Recalled

October 2006

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given consumers the OK to eat spinach if it wasn’t previously recalled in the E. coli contamination outbreak. The warning now only applies to Natural Selection Foods of San Juan Bautista, which includes 34 brands, and four other companies that it supplied.

The other companies include:

  • RLB Food Distributors of West Caldwell, New Jersey
  • River Ranch of California
  • Triple B Corporation/ S.T. Produce of Seattle, Washington
  • Pacific Coast Fruit Company of Portland, Oregon

All of these companies’ brands of fresh spinach and products containing fresh spinach are not to be consumed as they may still be involved in the outbreak.

The E. coli outbreak sickened 187 people in 26 states, with one confirmed death. This is the 20th outbreak linked to either lettuce or spinach since 1995, and half of them are linked to farms in California’s Salinas Valley. A source of the outbreak is still undetermined
