Salmonella Risk from Frozen Pot Pies
October 2007
Check your freezers – another frozen meat product poses a serious risk
of food poisoning that has already sickened over 100 people across
America. Chicken pot pies and turkey pot pies sold in both Banquet and
generic store-brand packaging may be tainted with Salmonella.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported they are investigating 139 cases of Salmonella poisoning across 30 states. In 23 of the cases, people were hospitalized due to the severity of their Salmonella infections. So far, Pennsylvania has the second highest number of pot pie-related Salmonella reports with 13 confirmed cases.
At the center of the frozen pot pie warning is ConAgra, the same company that recalled all Peter Pan peanut butter earlier this year due to Salmonella contamination. ConAgra has stopped production of new pot pie products while attempting to shift the blame by sighting pot pie undercooking by customers as the likely cause of Salmonella poisoning.
