Update on Outbreak of Salmonella-Tainted Peanut Butter

March 2007

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed the presence of Salmonella at the ConAgra plant that manufactured the infected Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter. The Sylvester, Georgia production facility tested positive for the same Salmonella Tennessee strain found in Peter Pan and certain Great Value peanut butter. (See our original alert for more recall information and symptoms of Salmonella.)

Recent recall updates have indicated that all Peter Pan peanut butter products produced since October 2004, including jars and single serving packs, may contain the dangerous bacteria. Only Great Value peanut butter jars purchased since October 2004 with a product code of “2111” are included in the recall.

Also, new commercial products that may contain peanut butter from the ConAgra plant have been added to the recall list. These products are not for direct sale to the public, but rather are used by restaurants and other retail outlets in prepared foods.
