Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 172 People

A salmonella outbreak has been linked to 18 states and sickened 172 people, health officials report. Produce is cited as the potential source of the outbreak while tomatoes and lettuce top the list of suspected produce.
To date, 11 people have been hospitalized with salmonella poisoning. Salmonella typically causes diarrhea and may include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever and headache. The most common strain of the illness, Salmonella typhimurium, is responsible for the current outbreak.

Most of the salmonella victims are adults, and more than 60 percent are women, claims an epidemiologist investigating the source of the outbreak. Currently, the illnesses have not been linked to any specific product, store or restaurant.
