Salmonella Outbreak at Popular Ohio Deli
February 23, 2006
Corky & Lenny’s, a well-known Woodmere, OH restaurant, is linked to 23 confirmed cases of salmonella, according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. Still pending are 71 probable cases of salmonella and one suspected.
The popular Cleveland-area restaurant is cooperating with health officials conducting the salmonella investigation. To date, Corky & Lenny's has been totally cooperative with the investigation. They voluntarily closed to clean and sanitize its kitchen in accordance with health department procedures. The restaurant’s staff was also tested for the disease.
Salmonella is transmitted to humans eating foods that have been contaminated with animal feces. Food can also become contaminated by a food handler infected with salmonella who forgot to wash their hands after using the restroom. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and can lead to hospitalization.
