Norovirus Outbreak at Western PA Nursing Home
February 2007
Nearly half the residents and staff of a Ligonier, Pennsylvania nursing home have become infected with norovirus. One 91-year-old resident died on February 25 with norovirus listed as a contributing factor.
Norovirus is spread through fecal matter or from residual bacteria of unwashed hands after using the bathroom. The highly contagious virus causes dehydration, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting over the course of 48 hours.
Bethlen Home has restricted incoming visitors and outgoing patients to only the most necessary appointments. However, the home has issued a statement clarifying that they are not under quarantine, and the neighboring Bethlen Communities residence is unaffected.
