Source of Taco Bell E. coli Still Unknown

December 2006

Green onions may have been blamed for the E. coli outbreak that affected over 60 people in four states, but testing linking the virus to the produce at Taco Bell restaurants has remained inconclusive. So while the source of the E. coli bacteria is stil unknown, Taco Bell officials plan on launching an industry-wide coalition to examine the safety of their fast food restaurants.

Taco Bell also announced that the company is changing their produce supplier in the Northeast, and assured their customers that all kitchens were sanitized and the food from affected restaurants was thrown out. Taco Bell performed independent tests on over 300 samples of their ingredients without finding a link to the E. coli bacteria contamination.

And even though green onions weren't proven as the source of the outbreak, Taco Bell will not bring scallions back to their menu. Taco Bell plans to re-open the 90 plus restaurants closed due to the outbreak over the next several weeks.
