Local Taco Bell E. Coli Scare

December 2006

What began as five possible Pittsburgh-area E. coli cases is now down to two. Three out of the five local residents suspected of having E. coli tested negative, according to Allegheny County Health Department.

In total, there have been more than 60 cases in four states including New Jersey, New York, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The majority of those sickened ate at a Taco Bell restaurant, but a specific menu item has not been pinpointed yet. Food samples taken from Taco Bell found the E. coli bacteria in green onions. Officials are awaiting test results from those who fell ill to see if they had the same strain of E. coli found in the green onions. Taco Bell has pulled green onions from all of its 5,800 restaurants.

Of those sickened in this outbreak, 75 percent were hospitalized and 11 percent developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can cause serious damage to the kidneys.
