Fear of E. coli Motivates Lettuce Recall

October 2006

A popular brand of lettuce grown in California’s Salinas Valley was recalled following concerns over E. coli contamination. This comes less than a week after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the OK to eat spinach if it was not previously recalled.

Nunes Company Inc. voluntarily recalled green leaf lettuce sold under the Foxy name brand from October 3-6. The recalled lettuce was sold in Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana grocery stores. The lettuce may have been sold to restaurants in these states.

Package details of the recalled lettuce include:

  • Green Leaf 24 Count, waxed carton
  • Green Leaf 18 Count, cellophane sleeve, returnable carton
  • 6SL0024 lot code

Nunes Company Inc. recalled the lettuce as a precautionary measure following reports that water used to irrigate the lettuce fields may have been contaminated with E. coli.
