Food Safety Crisis
February 2007
Amid food contamination outbreaks in peanut butter, cantaloupe, baby food, and more, new statistics show a 47 percent drop in the number of national food safety inspections over the past three years.
Other statistics continue to show the trend of waning food safety regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For example, 12 percent fewer FDA employees in field offices focus on food issues. Safety tests for nationally produced food have decreased from 9,748 in 2003 to 2,455 in 2006, a drop of almost 75 percent.
As U.S. produced food safety tests continue to decline, the amount of imported food consumed continues to rise. In 2006, the U.S. imported $10 billion more in food products than it exported. Only 1.3 percent of the imported food was inspected by the FDA, 25 percent less than in 2003.
