E. coli Cases Worse with Current Outbreak

September 2006

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) noticed that spinach tainted with E. coli is more potent than past outbreaks. The numbers of those who have fallen ill during this E. coil outbreak is up to nearly 150 people.

In previous E. coli outbreaks, twenty-five to thirty-five percent of the patients were hospitalized. The FDA has reported that with this strain of the E.coli contamination, fifty percent of those sickened were hospitalized.

Reports have begun to slow down, and no one has become sick since September 5. However, the FDA still maintains their warning of avoiding fresh spinach since the source of this outbreak is still unknown.
