E. coli Prompts Frozen Pizza Recall
November 2007
After you’ve cleaned the recalled frozen hamburgers out your freezer,
make sure you check your frozen pizza – it might be tainted with
dangerous food poisoning as well. General Mills has recalled Totino’s
and Jeno’s frozen pizzas because they may be tainted with E. coli
bacterium that has sickened at least 21 people.
The connection between the 3.3 million recalled pizzas and the E. coli poisoning stems from the pepperoni. All of the pizzas included in the recall have packages stamped with “EST. 7750” in the USDA mark of inspection. The pizzas have “best if used by” dates on or before April 8, 2008.
The following Totino’s and Jeno’s pizzas have been recalled:
- Jeno's Combination
- Jeno's Pepperoni
- Jeno's Supreme
- Totino's Classic Pepperoni
- Totino's Combination
- Totino's Pepperoni
- Totino's Pepperoni Trio
- Totino's Supreme
- Totino's Three Meat
So far, 21 sicknesses have been linked to the five million pounds of recalled frozen pizza. Related E. coli poisoning has been reported in ten different states, including Pennsylvania. This recall comes on the heels of a massive frozen ground beef recall that resulted in 21.7 million pounds being pulled for risk of E. coli.
