Source of E. coli-tainted Spinach Found
October 2006
The deadly strain of E. coli has been linked to wild pigs that may have contaminated the spinach fields with bacteria when they trampled fences surrounding the farms.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was able to determine the source of a recent E. coli outbreak that sickened over 200 people in 26 states and killed three. It’s the first time out of nine outbreaks that a source was positively determined.
The same strain of E. coli that tainted spinach was found in manure samples taken from a Salinas Valley cattle farm that also grows produce. The FDA is also investigating three other ranches in San Benito and Monterey counties. None of these farms are currently growing produce.
