The source of E. coli contamination in fresh, bagged spinach is still unknown, but tampering has been ruled out. Also, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has linked Natural Selection Foods, a California company, to the outbreak.
Natural Selection Foods, a producer and packager of spinach, recalled 34 brands of fresh spinach products.

River Ranch Fresh Foods also recalled all of its products containing spinach in all brands they pack with "Best if Used by Dates" of August 17, 2006 through October 1, 2006. These products include spinach and any salad with spinach in a blend. They outsource to Natural Selection for their produce and packaging.
The FDA continues to urge consumers not to eat any fresh spinach. They also point out that as the investigation continues other brands may be recalled. To date, 109 people have been affected with one death.
