Botulism Warning for Chili Sauce and Other Canned Goods

UPDATE – Castleberry’s has expanded their recall to include a wide range of canned products produced at its plant. The list of tainted products may be found below in the updated article.


Boutlism from hot dog chili sauce Check your kitchen shelves and cookout supplies – there may be a dangerous form of food poisoning lurking in your canned goods. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that botulism has been discovered in cans of hot dog chili sauce sold under the brand names of Austex, Castleberry’s, Kroger, and more.

All products were manufactured by the Castleberry Food Company in Augusta, Georgia. All expiration dates are included in the recall of canned goods that carry the following UPC codes:

Botulism is a rare but serious form of food poisoning that may become deadly if it is not treated immediately. Symptoms may begin anywhere from a few hours to a couple weeks after exposure, and may include difficulty breathing, speaking, and swallowing, as well as blurred vision and muscle weakness.
